Walking for a Cause

Jaime Lee, Journalist

We walk everywhere, don’t we? We walk the hallways and the streets. We walk the mall and we run in gym class, but can we really make a difference by just walking? We can. Somerset Berkley has its first Relay for Life team! Relay for Life celebrates the lives of cancer survivors and remembers the ones that were lost. Together, we walk to fight the disease that has already affected the lives of so many.

So what is Relay for Life? Developed by the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is designed to raise money for cancer research. People donate $100 or more to the cancer society and ground breaking research is made. Relay for Life represents the hope that those who have or have had cancer are not forgotten or unnoticed, that they will be supported, and that hopefully one day cancer can be eliminated. So tell me, if all you had to do was walk to save a life, would you do it?

At Relay, teams camp out overnight and take turns walking. There is always someone from each team walking because cancer never sleeps, so neither do we. Events can go as long as twenty-four hours in some cases. In our case, we will be walking from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on October 15, being led by Adam Desilva. The event is held at Salve Regina University in Newport Rhode Island. If you want to join us, you can talk to Mr. Fallon and join our fight.
