Somerset vs. Case Preview 2017
November 20, 2017
Red Sox-Yankees, Celtics-Lakers, Bruins-Canadiens- New England isn’t short on rivalries. On the fourth Thursday of November, early in the morning in a small part of southeastern Massachusetts, a historic rivalry is revived. Somerset vs. Case. Blue and White vs. Maroon and Gold . Raiders vs. Cardinals. The rivalry dates back to 1944, and itś only getting more heated. From Rallies to the Social Media wars, this feud is next level.
Every year the two schools put on skits mocking the other, thinking that this year they will hold the 49ers trophy. The rivalry has always had close scores, but has been that of winning streaks. Somerset dominated in the 70’s winning six in a row, whereas Case destroyed Somerset in the late 80’s winning five in a row and scored 111 more points in that span. Currently, it is the Raiders with the hot hand as they have won five in a row and are trying to make it six on Thursday in Swansea.
Can Somerset keep the streak alive? Judging by the statistics, itś more likely than not. Somerset enters the game as the reigning SCC champions and has 6-3 record. Case on the other hand, has been very mediocre at 5-5 record and has had a very up and down season. Case has the home field advantage, but the Raiders are 3-1 on the road this season. Seniors loom large on Somerset as Quarterback Chase Stafford and Tailback Steve Fralick man the offense, where Luke Faria and Matt Shea look to hold down the fort on defense. They’ve all had great senior campaigns, and there is no more fitting way to end a career as a Raider then to sweep Case in their tenure. Somerset has the size advantage as well, as they have both Somerset and Berkley as part of the football team. Somerset wants to end the season on a strong note where Case tries to start a new chapter in this is story of sweat, blood and football.
The rivalry looms large as star Somerset seniors look to cement their legacy as they look to sweep Case in their tenure at SB. The 49ers trophy has been in Somerset for quite sometime, but that doesn’t mean this game won’t be a fight. The 72nd of this amazing rivalry should be a treat; will Case pull off the upset, or will it be Raiders by 90?
