UNBROKEN (Movie Review)
January 5, 2015
Unbroken is a beautiful and wonderfully made film filled with sacrifice, heroism, and bravery. In the midst of World War II, Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) and a crew of American soldiers are flying over the ocean when their plane experiences technical problems. After the plane crashes, Louis and two other crew members, Phil (Domhnall Gleeson) and Mac (Finn Wittrock) are stranded at sea for forty-seven days until they’re finally rescued by the Japanese navy. Phil and Louis are now the only surviving members of the plane crash and are both taken to Tokyo where they are seperated. Louis is then dispatched to a Japanese detention camp. Throughout Louis’s journey, he experiences flashbacks to when he was a small boy and an olympic athlete.
This film is based on the long-running New York Times bestseller by Laura Hillenbrand. The film, packed with inspiration and emotion, is a truly unforgettable one. The viewer experiences a range of emotions throughout this film. Unbroken has incredible CGI (Computer-Generated Image) and a beautiful score. Jack O’Connell is brilliantly casted as Louis, the olympic athlete turned war hero. Director Angelina Jolie stuck closely to the book which shows throughout the movie. The suspense in this film is cleverly placed, keeping the viewer glued to their seats and rooting for Louis until the end. Unbroken carefully follows Louis’s downfalls and triumphs, his journey from a rebellious child to an accomplished olympic athlete, and his experience of war–glory, triumph, loss, bravery, fight, hope, and strength of will.
