“So long and Thanks For All The Fish” By” Douglas Adams Book Review

In this fourth book of “the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” trilogy, Arthur is back on Earth. However, the question is how can Arthur be on Earth if it was destroyed 8 years ago? Arthur just thinks he is losing his mind. All the earthlings think that the destruction of Earth was a hallucination because there is an Earth now but a curious Fenchurch convinces Arthur to help her figure out if something fishy is going on.

If you noticed, this book series is a trilogy but has five books. That’s because Adams was never going to write the last 2 books but he did, and many people say that he should of never wrote them. I disagree. This book has a great plot that leaves the reader thinking “How can the Earth be there if it was destroyed 8 years ago?” The plot fascinates the reader and a new character is introduced in this book, Fenchurch. Ford and Marvin come into this book but not until about 75% through. Zaphod and Trillain are nowhere to be seen and are mentioned in this whole book on only about half a page. The book did drag a little in the beginning. When I first opened this book, I wanted to close it immediately. The third book left on a cliff hanger and that cliff hanger is completely ignored in the beginning of this book. I had to give Adams a chance though and I am glad I did because the cliff hanger picks up about half way through the book. This book had Adam’s distinctive humor and a great plot. My biggest complaint though, is the lack of Zaphod and Trillian. This book is the only book so far in this “trilogy” that did not leave on a cliff hanger. It ends with what seems to be a preview of some story but then says “There was a point to this story, but it has temporarily escaped the chronicler’s mind.” This is probably a preview of the next book (and the last book in this “trilogy”), Mostly Harmless.
