INTO THE WOODS (SBRHS Spring Drama Production)
June 1, 2015
On May 8, 9, and 10th, the SBRHS Drama Club packed their bags and set off into the woods for four amazing shows directed by Sam Bianco and Lennie Machado. Into the Woods is a musical with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The show opens with a narrator reading a book with the classic beginning of “Once upon a time”. In a distant magical land, there are six main characters who believe that wishes are more important than anything else in their mystical world. Cinderella (Lauren Medeiros and Taiylor Medina) wishes to attend the King’s festival. Jack (Alexandria Celia) wishes for his cow Milky-White (Milky White Lawrence) to give milk so that his poverty-stricken mother and him may gain money to buy food. The Baker (William Medeiros) and his wife (Sydney Chase and Emma Botelho) wish to have a child. Little Red Riding Hood (Paige Capone and Jillian Brooks-Duval) wishes to bring food to her sickened grandmother. Rapunzel (Allison Pereira) wishes to leave the seemingly unbreakable bonds of her tower. Alas, they enter the woods, but the journey turns out to be more difficult than they expected. After all, what do you do after you get your wish?
All the performances were great, but perhaps the best one was the final show on Sunday. The roles of some of the characters were double-cast so that one performer in one of the leading roles didn’t have to sing and act in all four shows. The most notable performances overall included William Medeiros (the Baker), Isabella Seney (the Witch), Kevin Correa (Rapunzel’s Prince), Andrew Raposo (Cinderella’s Prince), and Alexandria Celia (Jack) who learned the role in a week’s time. Taiylor Medina (Cinderella), Sydney Chase (Baker’s Wife), and Paige Capone (Little Red) were distinctive as strong actresses. Lauren Medeiros (Cinderella), Emma Botelho (Baker’s Wife), and Jillian Brooks-Duval were conspicuous as strong singers. Of course, nothing would have been possible without the pit orchestra (conducted by Mr. Marshall) or the production crew who helped to make the production as great as it was. Into the Woods consisted of twists and turns, both of plot and of pathway. Make sure to be careful what you say, “Children Will Listen”. Lastly, be sure not to get lost in the woods, for what you’re trying to find may not be what you wanted!
