Bridge of Spies (Movie Review)

Bridge of Spies is a historical drama-thriller starring Tom Hanks and directed by Steven Spielberg.  The film takes place during the Cold War.  After Soviet forces capture American pilot Francis Gary Powers, the only hope for Powers rests on the shoulders of American lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks). Donovan sets off to Berlin with the goal of winning the man’s freedom via a prisoner exchange. If the Russians choose to cooperate, they will get the convicted spy Rudolf Abel who Donovan defended in court.  Filled with triumphs and downfalls, trials and tribulations, Spielberg’s new film defines what it truly means to be an American.

Based on a true story, Bridge of Spies is a natural candidate for Academy Awards.  As with most of his other films, Spielberg finds a way to hit home in an original and entertaining fashion.  Hanks (as always) is excellent in the lead role and is able to portray the internal struggles and conflicts of the main character in such a way that few Hollywood actors can.  The cinematography of the film is absolutely stunning, creating a sense of beauty in such a dark time.  Even though the plot became dragging at some points, Spielberg and Hanks keep your eyes addictively glued to the screen.  With an empowering message that leaves you emotionally moved, Bridge of Spies is definitely worth two and a half hours of your time!  After all, how could you go wrong with Tom Hanks playing the main character under Steven Spielberg’s direction?
