Jeff Reviews: Don’t Worry Darling
Official Plot Synopsis: In the 1950s, Alice and Jack live in the idealized community of Victory, an experimental company town that houses the men who work on a top-secret project. While the husbands toil away, the wives get to enjoy the beauty, luxury and debauchery of their seemingly perfect paradise. However, when cracks in her idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something sinister lurking below the surface, Alice can’t help but question exactly what she’s doing in Victory.
Spoiler Free: You should really worry, darling, because this movie was very disappointing. The movie has an insanely odd structure. Usually films have a 3 act structure of “Set up”, “Confrontation”, and “Resolution.” This film doesn’t really follow that. The film is about an hour and a half of tension building and then it skips the second act, which I think is the most important act of a film where the most substance lies. It skips that and goes right to the third act. When it is an hour and a half of tension building, it gets rather boring after a while. Florence Pugh is the only one in the film who gives a convincing performance. She is able to make this terrible dialogue she has to say somewhat convincing. Anytime Harry Styles is on screen he genuinely ruins any scene he is in, he is so laughably bad. His casting decision was made just to get people into the theater. I couldn’t find myself caring about any of the characters, the mystery was not intriguing and this story concept is really boring to me, and the acting was not good accept for Florence.
SPOILERS: The dialogue is just very condescending and not well thought out. A bad example I remember is “I don’t have dreams, I have nightmares”. The whole movie is just insanely predictable and telegraphed. Ten minutes in I thought to myself “It’s gonna take place in modern day”, sure enough that was an aspect of the twist ending. What I did not expect was it to be revealed that the whole thing was a simulation. After all the pointless buildup and for it to reveal something as lame as that was just horrible. It was already bad but this just made it irredeemable for me.
