Today, I will be reviewing Eminem’s new album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). In this review I will be talking about the new album, giving my opinion about it, then ranking the songs.
The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), was released by Eminem on July 12 of this year. Released through Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope Records, and selling 600,000 units (Not including physical copies). The album is about Eminem’s twisted alter ego, Slim Shady taking control of Em’s body and trying to get him canceled, as punishment for leaving him behind. Slim Shady almost immediately starts making fun of little people, mentally challenged people, trans people, and Christopher Reeve, to name a few. Eminem, though conscious, can do nothing to stop Slim Shady from succeeding in his goal, however it is revealed in the thirteenth song “Guilty Conscience 2” at the end, that it was just a bad dream that Em was having. Coup De Grâce means the final shot, right between the eyes. The album is made up of sixteen songs, and three skits, and takes about one hour and nine minutes to listen to.
In my opinion, The Death of Slim Shady is a pretty good album. While it does have, in my opinion, contenders for some of Em’s best songs, there are some songs that hold it back from being an amazing album. I also wanted to talk about the fourth song on the album, “Brand New Dance”, which has Slim Shady making fun of Christopher Reeve, who in case you didn’t know died back in 2004. However the song’s history is actually interesting, being made for Eminem’s 2004 album “Encore”, however being taken off because Reeve died one month before the album came out. Now, I want to talk about the story the album tells us, honestly the idea of Slim coming back in today’s world is great, and the music video for “Houdini” made me even more excited to see how Slim Shady would interact with today’s world. I feel Em did a great job with this, however during “Guilty Conscience 2”, the realization that it was just a dream, ruined what would have been a great end to the Slim Shady character. As a writer, this is the laziest way to end a story, as it takes away from the overall story, and makes what just happened seem pointless. If I had to give The Death of Slim Shady a score out of 10, it would be a 7.5/10.
Score scale: 1-2: Terrible 3-4: It’s Ok 5-6: Good 7-8: Pretty Good 9: Great 10: Amazing
