Seven Question Slam: Dr. Burke

Lily Botelho, Contributor

What is your favorite part about teaching?

Seeing students do something for the first time, especially when they weren’t sure they could do it.

How long have you been teaching?

In various jobs, I’ve been teaching people programming or how to use technology since I was in college thirty years ago. But even in high school I taught my peers how to draw graphics with BASIC code.

What’s your favorite book?

Dune, by Frank Herbert, is an all-time favorite of mine, but recently I’m enjoying Jeff VanderMeer’s work. Especially Annihilation and Borne. Super-weird.

What’s your favorite movie?

I vacillate between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Hitchcock’s Rear Window. But I’ll watch pretty much any cheesy horror or sci-fi movie

If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?

Physicist Richard Feynman. His autobiography Surely You’re Joking, My. Feynman had a great influence on me and led me to ask a lot of questions. I’d love to get into an argument with him; he would challenge me.

What’s your favorite color?

#0B6623, but #8B0000 is a close second.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I’ve never been to New Orleans; I’d love to experience the Creole cuisine and jazz music there, both of which are world-renowned.
